PAS rep 'saddened' by photo of 3 ex-members meeting Muhyiddin in Perlis

A Perlis PAS assemblyperson has questioned the presence of three representatives whose party memberships were terminated at a meeting between the party’s spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Describing it as a major issue, Beseri assemblyperson Haziq Asyraf Dun said the three assemblypersons were involved in disciplinary issues and “betrayal”.

“Why were former assemblypersons whose memberships have ceased present at a cordial meeting between Muhyiddin and Hashim?

“This is not a small matter. It touches on party discipline, trust and betrayal,” Haziq said in a social media post.

The post was accompanied by a photograph showing Muhyiddin posing with Hashim, Perlis Bersatu leaders, and the three assemblypersons - Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong), and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji).

Also seen was Perlis PAS ulama wing chief Ahmad Adnan Fadzil.

Muhyiddin’s visit came about a month after PAS central committee member Shukri Ramli stepped down as Perlis menteri besar. He was forced to resign after failing to secure the support of most state assemblypersons.

Shukri had faced eight statutory declarations (SDs) submitted by Perlis assemblypersons, three of which were signed by Saad, Fakhrul, and Ridzuan.

PAS subsequently terminated the memberships of the trio. The party viewed the incident, which resulted in a Bersatu assemblyperson becoming menteri besar, as an act of betrayal.

It also briefly strained ties between PAS and Bersatu, leading to calls for Muhyiddin to step down as Perikatan Nasional chairperson.

PAS later asserted that it would take over leadership of the coalition from Bersatu. However, Muhyiddin’s replacement has remained unclear so far.

Haziq, who is also Perlis PAS Youth chief, said he wondered whether the assemblypersons’ actions showed they had links to the meeting.

“Even more saddening is that someone who once came to see me and invited me to do ‘bad things’, trying to pull me into a path of betrayal against the party, was also in the same photo,” he said.

He added that he was “saddened” that what had happened suggested “betrayal is being given space”, causing confusion among PAS members who had long been taught about the importance of loyalty and discipline in the party.

Personal relationships

Ahmad Adnan told Malaysiakini that disputes, crises, or misunderstandings between parties do not affect the close ties among people in the state.

As such, he said, even though the assemblypersons had been subjected to disciplinary action, their personal relationships remained as usual.

Moreover, Ahmad Adnan said the three assemblypersons were not newcomers in PAS but had received good guidance from early on, including from Hashim, who is the PAS syura council mursyidul am (chief).

“When there is a feast or gathering, the mursyidul am will usually invite people, not because there is a discussion or anything, but because Muhyiddin came to meet the Perlis ruler and the menteri besar,” he said.

He added that Hashim is a highly respected figure and it was appropriate for him to be visited, including by Muhyiddin, who rarely visits Perlis.

“The PAS mursyidul am is also well known for his friendliness since long ago, and he usually invites everyone. I was invited too, that’s why I went.

“It was not an invitation in the name of the party, but because of my long-standing personal closeness with him,” he said.

‘Room for resolution’

Separately, Hashim told Malaysiakini there is still room for a resolution regarding the trio’s status, as all decisions made by Abdul Hadi are still subject to the syura council.

According to him, efforts to find a solution to the issue are underway and are expected to be finalised soon.

“As for the meeting the other day, what I can say is that efforts to find a solution regarding these three assemblypersons are being actively pursued.

“InsyaAllah, we are confident this can be resolved soon,” he said.

Elaborating on the proposed resolution discussed, Hashim explained that the three assemblypersons had submitted appeals to the PAS syura council.

“(We discussed a solution to the problem) between PAS central leadership and the three assemblypersons. They have appealed to the syura council and so on, and we will see - in next week’s meeting we will decide,” he said.

Asked about the PAS president’s reported decision to reject the appeals of the three assemblypersons, Hashim stressed that the final authority still lies with the council.

“The council still exists, so the president is still subject to it in this matter,” he said.

Hashim also clarified that meetings among the council’s top leadership do not require the president’s consent. - Mkini
