KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional is expected to appoint a new chairman on Thursday during an extraordinary meeting, the first since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resigned.
The meeting was confirmed in a notice dated Jan 23 issued by PN deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
Takiyuddin said the meeting follows written requests from Gerakan president and PN deputy chairman Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai and Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang on Jan 7 and Jan 10, respectively.
He said this was in accordance with the PN constitution, which requires the secretary-general to call a meeting within 14 days of receiving written requests from at least half of the coalition's component parties.
PN is currently without a secretary-general following the resignation of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who stepped down shortly after Muhyiddin quit his post in the wake of the Perlis political crisis.
According to the notice, the coalition will first elect a meeting chairman from among its deputy chairmen, as per Clause 8.3(II)(b) of the party constitution.
The meeting, scheduled for 8.30pm at the Gerakan headquarters, will then confirm Muhyiddin's resignation before appointing a successor under Clause 8.3(I)(b).
Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president and Pagoh member of parliament, announced his resignation as PN chairman effective Jan 1 after five years at the helm.
Apart from Bersatu, the coalition includes Pas, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP).
Speculation has mounted over the new leadership, with Abdul Hadi's name frequently mentioned. His party leads three states and holds the most seats in Parliament among the opposition.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, though not a deputy chairman, is also touted as a candidate.
Previously, Pas wings, including youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, had called for the chairmanship to be handed to the Islamic party, with Pas stating it was ready to lead the coalition.
However, the youth wings of Bersatu, Gerakan, and MIPP have urged Muhyiddin to remain as chairman. - NST
