KUALA LUMPUR: Monash University Malaysia president and pro-vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman has been appointed to an independent expert panel tasked with evaluating drug policies worldwide.

The panel, established by the United Nations (UN) Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), will assess the progress of global drug policies and submit recommendations ahead of a major review scheduled for 2029.

Dr Adeeba, who was selected by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, described the review as a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity to evaluate if international drug policies truly protect public health and human wellbeing.

"This is a rare opportunity to examine whether the international drug control system is fit for purpose and where improvements are needed.

"The panel brings together expertise from various regions and disciplines to examine how global drug policy can better reflect public health priorities, human rights considerations, and scientific evidence", she said in a statement issued by Monash University Malaysia today.

Dr Adeeba is widely recognised for her contributions to infectious diseases, harm reduction, and public health, particularly in addressing HIV among key populations and people who use drugs.

The former dean of Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Medicine has also served as a lead researcher for clinical projects focusing on addiction, HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis C within the Malaysian prison system.

She currently chairs the Malaysian Aids Foundation, which advocates for health-based drug law reforms. - NST
