Hamzah says he’s prepared to step down as opposition leader

However, the Larut MP says he will do so only if a majority of PN parliamentarians want him to step down.

Former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin said the most important thing was to ensure the opposition bloc remained united and continued to play an effective role in Parliament.
PETALING JAYA:
Hamzah Zainudin said he is prepared to step down as opposition leader but would only do so if a majority of Perikatan Nasional MPs want him to relinquish the post.

Hamzah said no single party had the final say in the matter, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“If opposition MPs no longer want me as their leader, I will step down as that would be the will of the majority,” he was quoted as saying.

The Larut MP went on to say that any opposition MP could succeed him as long as they had the backing.

He added that the most important thing was to ensure the opposition bloc remained united and continued to play an effective role in Parliament.

Yesterday, Perikatan Nasional chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the coalition would name an MP from PAS as the coalition’s new opposition leader by the end of this month.

Hamzah’s position as opposition leader has been in limbo since his expulsion from Bersatu on Feb 13, at the height of an internal leadership tussle with party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Last month, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said PN’s component parties had agreed to PAS taking over the opposition leader’s role. - FMT
