KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained a 32-year-old man for allegedly stealing gold and bronze items worth RM30,000 from a temple in Taman Maluri.
Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said a report was lodged at 6.55pm yesterday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Cheras district criminal investigation department arrested the local suspect in the Taman Maluri area.
"Police also seized several tools believed to have been used by the suspect during the crime.
"A background check revealed the suspect has a prior record involving 13 criminal and narcotic offences," Rosdi said in a statement today.
Investigations found several items missing from the temple, including a bronze statue, a gold-plated pure silver mace (gada), and bronze hanging lamps.
Rosdi said a preliminary urine test on the suspect returned positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines.
"The suspect has been remanded for seven days until March 21 to assist with investigations.
"The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft," he said. - NST
