PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that March 23, Monday, will be declared an additional Hari Raya holiday if Aidilfitri falls on Friday (March 20).

Alternatively, he said, Friday would be declared an additional holiday if Aidilfitri falls on Saturday, Bernama reported.

Anwar made the announcement while officiating National Consumer Day in Kota Kinabalu. Also present were Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor, domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali and deputy minister Fuziah Salleh.

“We are granting this additional Aidilfitri holiday because we see that everyone worked hard throughout the month of Ramadan. Celebrate Aidilfitri joyfully with your beloved families,” he said.

Muslims in Malaysia started fasting for Ramadan on Feb 19.

Anwar’s announcement comes after the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, urged all parties to remain patient and not be easily influenced by baseless speculation on the date of the first day of Syawal.

On March 9, Bernama reported that the sighting of the crescent of Syawal has been set for the evening of March 19 at 29 locations nationwide.

The Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal said the official Hari Raya Aidilfitri announcement would be made that evening.

The Conference of Rulers agreed that the date would be determined based on both rukyah (visual observation) and hisab (astronomical calculation). - FMT
