Asean Summit 2026: Economic meetings kick off in Cebu, Johari Ghani represents Malaysia

CEBU, (Philippines): The 48th Asean Summit in Cebu today continues with a series of key meetings involving leaders and ministers from the 11 Asean member states, focusing on strengthening regional cooperation across economic, political, security and diplomatic fronts.

The programme began with the 27th Asean Economic Community Council Meeting, attended by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

This will be followed by the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the Asean Political-Security Community Council Meeting, which are expected to focus on regional security issues and strategic cooperation among member states.

The 38th Asean Coordinating Council Meeting will also take place, ahead of a joint meeting of Asean foreign and economic ministers at 2.15pm, which Johari is also scheduled to attend.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to arrive at Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base at 1.50pm to attend the 48th Asean Summit and related meetings.

Anwar is also scheduled to attend the Special Summit of the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) at 4pm at Shangri-La Mactan.

The summit brings together leaders of member countries to strengthen subregional economic development involving Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

In a briefing yesterday, Malaysia's Ambassador to the Philippines Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony said Malaysia was expected to raise issues relating to conflicts in the Middle East, as well as Asean's response in ensuring regional energy and food security.

He said the summit provided an opportunity for Malaysia to exchange views on Asean Community-building efforts and the future direction of the regional bloc.

Malaysia's participation reflects its commitment to strengthening Asean centrality, unity and regional resilience amid an increasingly challenging global environment. - NST
