PETALING JAYA:
The Johor government is looking to gazette more than 500 parking bays in Johor Bahru to deal with the issue of vehicles owned by Malaysians working in Singapore taking up public parking space.

State executive councillor Jafni Shukor said this is expected to be implemented in the third quarter of this year, as it requires approval at the state level before enforcement by local authorities can begin, Sinar Harian reported.

“The state government is working to gazette several parking areas involving four local authorities – Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang, Kulai and Iskandar Puteri – that are facing this issue,” he told a press conference after the state assembly sitting in Kota Iskandar today.

He said this will require cooperation from various parties, including local authorities and public transport service providers.

Jafni, who is the state housing and local government committee chairman, said some motorists leave their vehicles in non-paying parking areas for up to 14 to 16 hours a day, limiting parking access for the public.

He said a different payment mechanism would be considered for motorists who park for more than two to three hours. - FMT
