New MACC chief not 'get out of jail free card', lawyer demands answers

With MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki set to step down on May 12, DAP women’s wing legal bureau chief Sangeet Kaur Deo stressed that a change in leadership cannot be an excuse for silence.

She said the appointment of a new MACC chief is not a "get out of jail free" card for unresolved investigations.

“Since the transition in leadership, the Madani government has been noticeably silent on two major controversies - the Azam shareholding allegations and the ‘corporate mafia’ reports.

“A new face at the top does not erase the deep institutional rot these issues represent,” added the lawyer.

Sangeet (above) noted that although a committee was established to investigate the matters and has since completed its work, its findings remain undisclosed.

“We are dealing with serious allegations of personal misconduct and systemic corruption. To date, there have been no meaningful updates on what investigations, if any, have been carried out.

“Accountability is non-negotiable. We urge the government to release the committee’s findings immediately,” she added.

She cautioned that further delay risks fuelling the perception that a new appointment is being used as a cover-up to bury the truth.

Sangeet’s statement comes hot on the heels of her brother, DAP chairperson Gobind Singh Deo, who pressed Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail for updates on investigations into the “corporate mafia” allegations.

The “corporate mafia” scandal erupted into the spotlight following a Bloomberg report on Feb 12, alleging that MACC officials colluded with businesspersons to orchestrate corporate takeovers. The MACC denied the claims, describing them as a plot to smear its reputation.

On the separate issue of Azam’s shareholding controversy, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said on April 15 that the cabinet had decided to leave the matter to Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to take any necessary action.

On April 25, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar consented to the appointment of former judge Abdul Halim Aman as the new MACC chief commissioner, replacing Azam, whose tenure had been extended three times under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. - Mkini
