RM384 KLIA parking bill sparks debate over rate transparency

KUALA LUMPUR: A social media influencer's frustration over a RM384 parking bill at Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (KLIA) Long-Term Car Park (LTCP) has sparked online debate, with many questioning the transparency of parking rate changes.

In a viral video, the influencer warned travellers against using the LTCP, claiming the parking charges had increased significantly without clear public notice.

"Here's a PSA to everyone planning to go to KLIA. Do not park at the long-term car park," she said in the video.

She said she had parked at the facility for 12 days after referring to what she believed were previously promoted rates, only to be shocked by the final bill.

"I parked for 12 days. Guess how much I had to pay? RM384."

The influencer also alleged that Malaysia Airports had not adequately communicated the change through its social media platforms.

"I looked through everything. The last post on May 1 was 'Happy Labour Day'," she said, describing the pricing update as unfair, particularly for lower-income travellers who may opt for long-term parking as a cheaper alternative to ride-hailing services.

She also claimed that when checking parking charges online, the estimated amount for the same duration appeared to be about RM213, but she was later told by a staff member that cheaper rates only applied to advance online bookings.

Responding to the issue, Malaysia Airports clarified that the lower LTCP rates referenced by the influencer were part of a promotional campaign that ended on Feb 24 this year, and that the current drive-in rates are not new but a return to the standard pre-promotion pricing.

The airport operator acknowledged the confusion and said clearer communication was needed.

"Malaysia Airports regrets any confusion experienced by our passengers and acknowledges that greater clarity is essential in communicating car park pricing and promotional period campaigns," it said in a statement to the New Straits Times.

It said its online parking pre-booking platform, introduced on Feb 25, offers consistently lower rates than standard drive-in charges, with earlier bookings and longer stays providing better value.

Malaysia Airports also said pricing information is regularly updated on its website and pledged to improve social media announcements regarding future changes. - NST
