Sabahans advised to check meter readings amid electricity bill complaints

KOTA KINABALU: Electricity consumers have been reminded to monitor their electricity meter readings and monthly bills following growing concerns of suspected tampering and malfunctions.

Yayasan Pengguna Negara Malaysia (YPNM) Sabah chapter president David Chan said consumers should immediately report any unusual spikes in meter movements, abnormal readings, or charges that do not reflect actual usage to Sabah Electricity (SE) for inspection and verification.

He said some households have reported unusually high consumption despite the premises being vacant for months, for example, when the occupants were overseas.

"Early reporting is crucial to determine whether the issue stems from technical malfunction, meter irregularities, or possible tampering," he said Friday (May 15).

Chan urged consumers to also assist the SE meter readers as they have experienced incidents, including dog attacks, that interfered with their attempts to get proper readings.

He also urged consumers to cooperate and give feedback to help detect abnormalities during routine visits.

"Ignoring abnormal readings could lead to unnecessary disputes and financial burdens.

"We also call on Sabah Electricity to continue engaging and educating customers to ensure fair, transparent and efficient (service)," he added.

Following the increase of electricity charges in February, SE said most consumers could expect about 15% higher monthly bills.

However, many consumers have complained that their monthly bills doubled or did not reflect their usage.

In response, SE chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar told reporters on Tuesday (May 12) that the high bills were mainly caused by outstanding payments, increased consumption and meter tampering, rather than the recent tariff adjustment.

However, he assured that SE would reach out to every complainant and investigate each issue thoroughly. - Star
