Selangor ruler shares pointed reflection on politicians, wealth and graft

Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah referenced former United States president Harry S Truman’s words in a warning against politicians enriching themselves while in power.

Highlighting the nexus between politics and wealth in a post on the Selangor Royal Office’s Facebook page last night, His Royal Highness expressed his interest with quotes attributed to the 33rd US president.

The first translated quote states: “No one can get rich in politics unless he’s a crook.”

The ruler then shared a second quote: “If the wealthiest people in a society are its politicians, that society is fundamentally corrupt.”

While Sultan Sharafuddin did not specify whom he was directing the veiled yet pointed remarks to, the Selangor Royal Office noted that the ruler intended the shared quotes to serve as a “beneficial reflection” for the rakyat.

The Selangor Royal Council also defended Sultan Sharafuddin against a misconception that the ruler was interfering with state executive administration through his decrees.

In a statement yesterday, the council stressed that Sultan Sharafuddin highly values effective action rather than empty promises in addressing the people’s issues.

It said that any advice, reprimand, and reminder from the sultan constituted important counsel from a ruler to ensure that the state administration is carried out with full responsibility.

The council added that the term “decree” regularly used by a sultan when delivering his remarks simply meant “advice” in everyday language and is not equivalent to a royal command.

It stressed that the state’s menteri besar is constitutionally required to consult the sultan on matters affecting state administration and public welfare, so that the ruler is informed of developments and able to offer advice guided by the interests of the people, rather than political considerations.

The council said the statement was issued to refute views from certain political quarters who claimed that Sultan Sharafuddin’s royal address at the opening of the Selangor state legislative assembly last month had interfered in the state government’s administration and violated the concept of a constitutional monarchy. - Mkini
