Transitional monsoon to bring more heavy rain, thunderstorms in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The transitional monsoon phase currently affecting the country is expected to continue, bringing more frequent heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly in the evenings and at night this month.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the phase began on March 29, following the end of the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon.

He said winds from various directions during the transitional monsoon period are the main factor in the formation of thunderstorm clouds that can trigger heavy rain over short periods.

"This phenomenon typically brings heavy rain with strong winds, especially in western and inland areas of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as Sabah and Sarawak.

"It also has the potential to cause flash floods, fallen trees and damage to weak structures," he told Harian Metro.

He said among the main stations recording the highest rainfall readings on May 6 were Petaling Jaya, Selangor, with 97.6mm, followed by Ipoh, Perak (50.2mm) and Keningau, Sabah (48.2mm).

He said several auxiliary meteorological stations recorded heavy rainfall, including the Jorak Agricultural Centre in Pagoh, Johor, with 89.2mm and Pantai Kuching, Sarawak (64.2mm).

"With the unpredictable weather, the public, especially residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas, should remain vigilant and stay updated with the latest weather information.

"The public should not take lightly thunderstorm and heavy rain warnings issued by the agency from time to time.

"The public is advised to stay alert to weather forecasts and warnings via the official website, the myCuaca app and MetMalaysia's official social media," he said. - NST
