Zahid to table National Tahfiz Council plan at cabinet meeting next week

KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to establish a National Tahfiz Council will be tabled at the cabinet meeting next Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Tahfiz education must be given a more meaningful place within the mainstream national education system.

"Whether registered or unregistered, we must elevate Tahfiz education. I therefore fully support the proposal to establish a National Tahfiz Council.

"I will personally bring this proposal to the cabinet meeting next Wednesday for approval," he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Bumiputera Education Congress, held in conjunction with Umno's 80th anniversary here today.

At the ceremony, Zahid also received the congress resolutions presented by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who chaired the congress.

When asked how the government plans to assist Tahfiz schools, which continue to face various challenges, and how these issues can be addressed, Zahid said he had already taken steps through the establishment of Tahfiz Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

"Tahfiz students have been given access to a new education ecosystem that not only focuses on careers in Usuluddin and Syariah, but also encourages them to be mainstreamed into professional fields.

"This is what I am currently doing through the National TVET Council. Once the National Tahfiz Council is established, we will coordinate both councils to mainstream Tahfiz students," he told reporters after the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, Zahid also agreed to calls for the immediate establishment of a Teachers' Commission to strengthen and uphold the teaching profession.

He said he would bring the proposal to the cabinet as it had been adopted as a resolution at the congress.

"Teachers are not merely syllabus deliverers in the classroom but human builders.

"Teacher welfare, training, workload and schools must be prioritised.

"Teachers should not spend more time filling out forms than educating students," he said.

He also announced that the government had agreed to upgrade the National Council for TVET into a National TVET Commission.

"In pre-school education, I would like to offer myself as chairman of the high-level committee to coordinate pre-school education.

"Hopefully, what we have achieved will not remain on paper. It must be implemented," he said. - NST
