A man who was slapped with a summons for wearing short pants while on the way to a futsal game in Kota Bharu was just one out of 11 people who had received summonses for similar offences.
Kelantan Islamic Affairs Religious Department (Jaheaik) director Che Mohd Rahim Jusoh told Malaysiakini that the summonses were issued based on a joint operation with the Road Transport Department and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) on Monday.
"We conducted checks at the location and issued 11 summonses for inappropriate clothing (tidak sopan) to seven men who wore short pants and four women for not wearing the tudung and wearing tight clothing.
"All of them were instructed to attend counselling classes with Jaheaik's enforcement division," he said.
Yesterday, 30-year-old Wan Khairul Hayyee Wali said he was surprised at being slapped with a summons for wearing short pants while on the way to a futsal game.
Wan Khairul said he had stopped his car to buy a burger for his wife before going to the game.
He must attend counselling or face court action, which could see him being fined up to RM1,000.
Meanwhile, Jaheaik (enforcement) assistant director Mohd Fadzuli Mohd Zain defended the operation, stressing that it was meant to educate Muslims.
"The rule is not new and had been gazetted since 1985 but we did not enforce it strictly until now," he said.
He said some 70 people have been made to take counselling with Jaheaik this year, many of whom were women.
He added that Wan Khairul would not have been fined had he been at a suitable venue, such as a futsal court.
Meanwhile, Kelantan PAS information chief Nasaruddin Daud, when contacted declined to comment on the matter.
"I don't want to comment as people are making an issue out of it," said Nasaruddin, who is also exco in charge of Islam.
Kelantan PAS Ulama chief Hassan Mahmood, when contacted, also declined to comment.
"I don't want to comment as I fear it will court controversy," he said.- Mkini
