After Imams fiasco, DPM says Cabinet only discussed umrah fraud

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed that the Cabinet had indeed discussed efforts to curb fraudulent umrah packages, but did not go into specifics.
He was commenting on the fiasco over the Integrated Manasik Monitoring System (Imams), which was scrapped yesterday just a day after it was launched, due to public complaints.
“Cabinet was informed about it (efforts to curb fraudulent umrah packages), but not through Imams.

“(What was discussed) was that the company would be registered and certain regulations would be put in place, and monitoring would be carried out so that pilgrims won't be victimised.
“However (the discussion) did not involve appointing any company to handle it,” Zahid told the media after an event at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.
Imams, which was aimed at curbing umrah package frauds, was meant to be compulsory for the umrah visa application process, and would have been imposed on all 65 tourism agencies that handle umrah in Malaysia.
However, after the launch, there was an outcry among netizens over the company being headed by a non-Muslim top executive.
Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz today denied Imams was then abandoned over the matter, claiming it was scrapped because he did not agree with its pricing.- Mkini
