KUALA LUMPUR: Worshippers at two Hindu temples in Setapak here have petitioned Inspector-General of Police Mohd Fuzi Harun to take action against secret society members who intruded into the temples and threatened their priests.
The petition was handed over to the IGP’s representative DSP Faizal Samsuddin at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today by Sri Batrakaali Amman Tevastaanam priest Elangovan Mariappan.
He was accompanied by Selangor Urimai Welfare Association chairman Manikavasagam Sundaram.
The petition included the names of three alleged gangsters, and blamed the lack of police action for their boldness in causing trouble at the Sri Batrakaali Amman Tevastaanam and Om Sri Vall Muniswarar Alayam temples.
The gangsters, believed to be members of the “08” secret society, allegedly insulted the temple priests, intruded into the temples and the priests’ living quarters, behaved rudely, and took photographs of the priests and their family members without permission.
Elangovan, 53, said the gangsters had been disturbing them since last year.
The Sri Bathrakaliaman Devasthanam in Taman Air Panas, Setapak.
“Five of them would come to our temple twice each week to chase us away and order us to shift.
“They took pictures of my children and wife. They were not sent by the developer (of a project in the area) but refused to tell us where they are from,” Elangovan told reporters outside Bukit Aman.
“On Dec 21, about 3.30pm, some of the gangsters came to my temple and ordered us to vacate it immediately. They also threatened to demolish the temple.”
Manikavasagam said a total of 48 reports had been lodged with the police by worshippers at the two temples.
“Until today, no action has been taken by the police.
“No one has been injured so far but we are worried the situation may deteriorate,” he said.
Manikavasagam said the two temples were built with approval from the authorities.
He added that the temple managements had no problem with the developer of a housing project in the area as the two sides had agreed on the relocation of the temples. -FMT
