KUALA LUMPUR — Utusan Malaysia has published an uncredited infographics warning of a purported “DAP virus” and the problems that would allegedly arise under a Pakatan Harapan (PH) federal government.
In the image tagged as “InfoPRU” (Election Info) and printed on the 10th page of today’s edition, the Malay-language daily featured a heading saying, “Awas virus DAP” (Beware the DAP virus).
Under this heading, it placed a list of labels with the “check” sign next to them.
The labels include secular; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT); chauvinistic; ethnic divider; perkuda Melayu (using the Malays); wants to change the Federal Constitution; questions the rights of Malays, Islam; anti-Islam.
Some of these labels have been used by DAP’s critics to attack the party, but the latter has maintained that it is not anti-Islam or anti-Malay.
DAP is part of the federal Opposition Pakatan Harapan, which has made various pledges in an agreement signed on January 9, 2016.
Among other things, the PH agreement pledges that the coalition will defend the Federal Constitution; and maintain Islam as the religion of the federation with other religions to be practised in peace and harmony in line with the Constitution’s Article 3; and to protect the special position of Malays and Sabah and Sarawak’s Bumiputera and the legitimate interests of other ethnic groups in line with the Constitution’s Article 153.
Utusan’s infographics also showed photos conveying that problems with water, vice, land and massage parlours would crop up if PH wins the general election.
The infographics stated that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad allegedly accused PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang of hypocrisy, but noted that Dr Mahathir was working with DAP that he previously derided for alleged racism and chauvinism.
It also featured a quote purportedly attributed to Dr Mahathir of his willingness to help lure Malays into supporting the federal Opposition.
The infographics did not state the source for its contents.
It is unclear why the infographics was featured, but the same page carried a collection of comments from Malaysians that did not accept DAP, as well as former Opposition members warning against DAP or commenting on DAP’s foregoing of its rocket logo for PKR’s logo in the 14th general elections (GE14).
Today is advance voting day for GE14, while polling day is on May 9.
