1MDB raids: Take action against cops leaking photos, urges lawyer

Civil rights activist Andrew Khoo says police personnel should not allow euphoria of post-election to influence their duty to uphold the law.
On Saturday, Rosmah Mansor urged the authorities ‘to avoid a premature public trial’ on social media.
PETALING JAYA: Police personnel should be immediately removed and face disciplinary action if they are proven to have shared photos linked to an ongoing investigation on social media, says a human rights lawyer.
Lawyer Andrew Khoo said they should be immediately removed as members of the investigation team as they should not be allowed to share photos.
“These police personnel should conduct themselves professionally,” he told FMT following complaints made by Rosmah Mansor, wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, about leaked photos from police raids on their home being shared on social media.
Her statement was issued as Najib complained that policemen had helped themselves to food and chocolates from the refrigerator at the home of one of their children.
Rosmah was particularly critical about details of the items allegedly confiscated being published on social media and demanded that the authorities follow the rule of law and due process.
She urged the authorities “to avoid a premature public trial”. Enforcement agencies, she said, should not be feeding social media “trolls” but should observe strict professionalism.
Khoo said the police personnel should not allow the euphoria of the post-election situation to influence or undermine their duty to uphold the law and act professionally at all times.
On Friday, police confiscated 284 handbags, some bearing the Hermes-Birkin name, and 72 pieces of luggage containing cash and jewellery in an operation at three luxury apartments in Bukit Bintang.
Five Black Maria lorries were needed to cart away all the seized goods.
The investigations are being conducted by the commercial crime unit and anti-money laundering unit of the federal police headquarters. They were linked to the alleged embezzlement of billions of ringgit from the government-owned 1Malaysia Development Berhad. -FMT
