Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been presented with another list of names of those who should be on the Immigration Department’s blacklist, according to a government source.
The initial list, said the source, has already been enforced.
“The second list which has been presented to the prime minister for his approval is expected to be enforced soon,” he told Malaysiakini.
The source said the list is related to 1MDB and other cases which are under investigation.
“It is a preemptive move to avoid those involved or soon to be involved in investigations. Barring them would prevent the need for an extradition process later on,” he added.
However, the source was tightlipped on who is on the list or the number of names.
“All I can say is that it is a very long list,” he added.
Speculation had been rife that among those on the list is 1MDB chief executive officer Arul Kanda Kandasamy and attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Immigration Department director-general Mustafar Ali on this and is awaiting his response.
On Saturday, Malaysiakini revealed that former premier Najib Abdul Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, were barred from travelling abroad.
This was after a purported flight schedule went viral on social media claiming the former premier was to fly to Indonesia in a private jet.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, a source close to Najib said the latter wanted to go on a two-day break.
Mahathir later confirmed he had instructed the Immigration Department to blacklist Najib.
