Bandar Kuching MP gets down to work, touches base with city mayor

After a euphoric election victory, newly-minted Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has got down to work to fulfil the promises he made to his voters.

Today, Yii and his delegation made a courtesy call on Kuching mayor, James Chan Khay Syn and also touched base with Kuching Selatan City Hall (MBKS) officers at Padungan.

One of the key issues discussed was the relationship between the federal government and the MBKS and how both these institutions could work together specifically for the good of the people of Kuching, Yii told Malaysiakini.

“We also identified different critical areas which need urgent attention including the perennial issue of flash floods and inadequate drainage in several areas around Kuching,” he said.

“In order to address this chronic issue, there will be a greater need for better cooperation between the relevant agencies including the local council, the Department of Drainage and Irrigation and also the Public Works Department,” added Yii.

He said a proper drainage masterplan will be suggested to cater for the current needs as well as to support future developments in the city.

“Many of the residents in and around the periphery have faced the inconvenience of dealing with flash floods for many years but yet until now there has been no effective solution,” he said.

“We will also make sure to work with the right channels to obtain funds to address these problems and to make sure they are properly used and benefit the people directly,” he said.

He said the party is looking forward to greater cooperation and to work together professionally with the various departments to make sure issues that have been plaguing the residents of Bandar Kuching are addressed effectively. -Mkini
