PETALING JAYA: Parti Warisan Sabah leader Shafie Apdal has advised former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad against visiting Sabah to campaign for the upcoming polls.
Sabah Barisan Nasional secretary Abdul Rahman Dahlan said Shafie knows that if he were to bring Mahathir to Sabah, Warisan would lose badly, Borneo Post reported.
“This is because many people do not agree with Mahathir,” Rahman told reporters at an event in Kg Lobou 1, Inanam.
He urged Shafie not to hide the selection of Mahathir as Pakatan Harapan’s prime minister candidate from the people of Sabah.
He predicted that many of the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) voters would not vote for Warisan in the general election as a sign of protest towards the party for allegedly being Mahathir’s “proxy” in Sabah.
“I can understand the KDM voters’ rationale.
“Last time, they never had the chance to express their feelings towards Mahathir.
“That is why Mahathir does not want to come to Sabah and Sarawak to campaign,” he said.
In the past, Sabah parties had accused Mahathir of being behind “Projek IC”, a clandestine operation to grant identity cards to illegals.
Sabah BN leaders have recently said Sabah’s needs had been neglected while Mahathir had been prime minister for 22 years.
They said it was Prime Minister Najib Razak who had allocated a lot of funds for Sabah and had promised to return the state’s rights as stated in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
