KUALA LUMPUR – PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar offered her thanks to Malaysians over their outpouring of support today in response to a caller’s apparent attempt to humiliate her during a talk show.
Malaysians used Twitter to back the Permatang Pauh MP and denounce a caller who “advised” her to dress more appropriately, claiming that her tudung occasionally shifted and exposed her brassiere and even breasts.
While she appeared nonplussed during the call, Nurul Izzah said she had been disturbed by the sexist nature of the call
“Initially, I was taken aback. But heartened by the sensitivity and grace of so many in defence of women [everywhere].
“Such invasiveness smacks of the sexism and harassment women have had to endure. We must push back, inculcate better appreciation and treatment of women,” she wrote on Twitter.
The caller made the remarks during an online chat show hosted by Faizal Ismail.
Caller to talk show attempts to school Nurul Izzah on how to dress
KUALA LUMPUR — When many Malaysians are busy inundating their elected representatives with ideas on the country’s direction, one was more interested in Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s sartorial sense and modesty.
Calling in to a talk show featuring the PKR vice-president, a caller who identified himself as “Azrul” said she needed to take better care with her dressing.
“YB’s tudung is sometimes worn mistakenly, you know, the top part (of your dress) is visible,” he said after introducing himself.
Nurul Izzah and the show’s host, Faizal Ismail, appeared taken aback momentarily, before recovering and agreeing with Azrul.
He then went on to explain what he meant.
“This is especially when you wear tight kebaya, we can see the top of your dress.
“We can see your underwear, can see your breasts,” he continued.
Nurul Izzah appeared unfazed by the remarks and thanked Azrul for his input.
