Citing 'miscommunication', lawyer urges Jamal to surrender

The lawyer for Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Yunos (above) has urged his client to surrender himself to the police and assist in the completion of an ongoing bail proceeding.
In a statement, Jamal's lawyer Mohd Imran Thamrin said that Jamal's disappearance from his hospital ward yesterday was unintentional and could be due to unfamiliarity with out of court bail proceedings.
"I believe that maybe there was some 'miscommunication' and our client had assumed that the bail proceedings were completed.
"This was his first experience dealing with a situation or procedure involving being charged from out of court," said Imran, who is also the Sungai Panjang assemblyperson.
Imran also confirmed that the Red-Shirts leader had disappeared from his hospital ward at around 3.30pm yesterday before the bail proceedings were completed.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said yesterday that Jamal was charged by a magistrate at the KPJ Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital but disappeared during the bail proceedings.
Police have since launched a manhunt for Jamal and issued a wanted notice against him.
Imran, meanwhile, claimed his client had no intentions to commit another crime.
"I believe this case was a genuine mistake without intentions to commit any crime, including to run away from detention.
"I am worried that he may be in a state of trauma or unnecessary pressure because of this situation as this was a new experience for him," Imran said.
He urged members of the public with information on Jamal's whereabouts to come forward and assist police.
He further revealed that his team was taken to Ampang Jaya district police station at about 5pm last evening to assist police, and only left some 10 hours later.
Jamal yesterday claimed trial before Magistrate Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin to a charge under Section 290 of the Penal Code, which is related to being a public nuisance.
If found guilty, Jamal, 48, can be slapped with a fine of RM400.
The court allowed the Umno leader bail at RM3,000 and fixed June 8 for mention at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court. - Mkini
