New Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (above) has assured that Penang will always be open to new ideas and criticisms as the state respects freedom of speech and recognises the need to be receptive in order to move forward.
"Citizen participation is important and should be embraced, so that they could be heard and to keep the government in check.
In his Wesak Day message today, the chief minister cited the May 9 polls as one of the greatest historical moments for the nation.
He noted that after 60 years, the people decided to change a new federal government through the ballot box in a peaceful manner, without shedding a single drop of blood.
"The transition of power and the change of federal government in a professional manner should be lauded, thanks to the maturity and right thinking of Malaysians which made up of people from different walks of life, political affiliations, religions and races," the DAP Penang chief said.
Chow also pledged to uphold the Constitution of the country and promised to do his best to keep the state safe and in harmony.
He added that the Wesak Day's theme for this year, "Harmonious Society Through Tolerance and Understanding", comes at the right time.
Without tolerance and understanding, he reminded, there would be no harmonious society.
"I would also like to stress that, mutual respect is one of the keys in a diverse and colourful society like Malaysia.
"Penang, with more than a 230-year-old history that respects all faiths and beliefs, will continue to spearhead the celebration of these cultural and traditions uniqueness among us," he said.
He added that Penang, as a melting pot of diversity, was a success story of cooperation and progress to the point it among the top states in Malaysia and the world.
As Malaysians usher in the new era of Malaysia, Chow said everyone should also change their way of life and attitude by being better citizens, better children, parents and friends.
He said: "Regardless of our background and beliefs, let's get rid of extremism, radicalism and hatred.
"Talk and act with compassion, manners, and loving kindness.
"Let's work together, by celebrating our differences and make it as our strength instead of our shortcoming, to make Penang a great city to live, to work and to retire."
As a result, Penang will be cleaner, greener, safer and healthier, he said. - Mkini
