Committee on institutional reforms formed


The swift-acting Council of Elders has announced the formation of a Committee on Institutional Reforms in its efforts to aid the new government's plan to implement economic and financial changes.
The committee, revealed in a statement by the council today, comprises mainly of legal personalities including former Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan.
"Economic reforms on its own cannot bring about the desired change unless accompanied by institutional reforms.
"Towards this end, a committee on institutional reforms has been formed...," the council stated.   
Members of the Committee on Institutional Reforms are:
  • Retired Court of Appeal judge KC Vohrah
  • Retired Court of Appeal judge and Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) commissioner Mah Weng Kwai
  • Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan (Patriot) president and retired brigadier general Mohd Arshad Raji
  • National Human Rights Society (Hakam) chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan
  • Universiti Malaya law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi
The committee's exact scope has not been outlined.
However, it was stated that the committee would present its findings and recommendations to the Council of Elders.
The council would, in turn, present this report to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. -Mkini
