Even ordinary citizens have a duty to assist the current government in carrying out its duties, said PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
"Do not demand positions or wealth or power because that will jeopardise the entire spirit of the struggle," he said at a breaking fast function with his wife and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Anwar escorted Wan Azizah to the function with some 300 people at the Masjid Nurul Hidayah mosque in her Pandan constituency.
In his speech, he said the Pakatan Harapan government under Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has a duty to fulfil its promises to the people, among others, to resolve issues surrounding disparity of income and wealth.
"Our duty (as ordinary citizens) is to assist (the government) so that their duties can be carried out," said Anwar who pointed out that he is now an ordinary citizen after being freed from jail and granted a full royal pardon.
"I said to the prime minister that as an ordinary citizen, I will urge all the people to monitor how the deputy prime minister carries out her duties in Pandan.
"We will also monitor how Izham Hashim carries out his duties (as assemblyperson) in Pandan Indah," said Anwar in reference to Selangor Amanah chief Izham Hashim who was also present.
"That is our duty now (to monitor). Not only to criticise them but to remind them of the duties that they have to fulfil," Anwar further said.
In her own speech, Wan Azizah meanwhile related that she had spent time earlier this morning accompanying Anwar to watch the Champions League match between Real Madrid and Liverpool.
She also quipped that her "escort" had not watched any match for a very long time.
"My point is, we are all working together as a team to rebuild the country.
"We cannot do it on our own. Winning or losing is a normal thing. In the end, it is the people who must win," she said. -Mkini
