KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah has been relieved of all duties as Treasurer-General with immediate effect, according to the Chief Secretary.
The decision is the latest by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration that is launching fresh investigations on officials linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
According to national news agency Bernama, Irwan will be placed under the Public Services Department and is barred from performing any of his duties as Treasurer-General.
Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, have both been barred from leaving Malaysia pending investigations on the firm. – malay mail
Dr M directs MoF to review Budget, check behind the sofa
PUTRAJAYA — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his administration will conduct a mid-term review of Budget 2018 to see if there are potential savings to be had.
The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman also said he hoped the fresh evaluation would lead to undiscovered ways to reduce government expenditure.
“We will have to look into the midterm Budget. But I have instructed the Finance Ministry to look closely at the Budget to determine priorities,” he said after he was asked if a fresh federal spending plan would be tabled in Parliament after his first 100 days.
“We hope we can reduce the expenditure of the government as much as possible.”
