Istana Negara says King has performed his duty faithfully in accordance with the Federal Constitution before consenting to appointment.
PETALING JAYA: An aide to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has refuted allegations that the King had tried to delay the appointment of Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the country’s seventh prime minister.
In a statement issued this evening, Comptroller of the Royal Household Wan Ahmad Dahlan Aziz said Istana Negara only received letters from the heads of the four PH component parties at 1.38pm supporting Mahathir as their choice for prime minister.
“His Majesty, after having reviewed the documents, invited the four party leaders — PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu — and Mahathir to an audience with him at 5pm.
“After having interviewed and listened to all their views, His Majesty decided to invite Mahathir to form the next federal government, pursuant to Article 43(2a) of the Federal Constitution.
“His Majesty then consented to swear Mahathir in as the country’s seventh prime minister at 9.30pm today,” Dahlan said.
“Istana Negara strongly refutes any allegation that His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V delayed the appointment of Mahathir as prime minister.”
He added that the King had performed his duty faithfully in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
“His Majesty looks forward to working with Mahathir and his administration for the betterment of our nation and all its people.” -FMT
