MP lodges report urging police to reopen Altantuya case

A police report has been lodged to urge the police to reopen investigations into the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng in his police report filed today said he wants the police to investigate the motives behind the act, as well as the persons responsible in instructing former police commandos Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri to murder Altantuya.
Both the High Court and Federal Court did not make a decision on those responsible for instructing the duo to carry out the murder, and no motive was established, Lim pointed out.
Lim also noted Sirul's present willingness to give his statement on what that had actually taken place at the time.
"The person responsible for ordering Altantuya's murder must be charged in court immediately for abetting in the murder of Altantuya," he said, according to the report.
Inspector-general of police (IGP) Mohamad Fuzi Harun yesterday said the case might be re-opened if there were fresh leads.
Mongolian president Khaltmaagiin Battulga last week urged Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to help the family of Altantuya seek justice.
Sirul and Azilah were attached to then deputy prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's security detail at the time of the murder. They were convicted and sentenced to death for murder.
While Azilah is currently on death row, Sirul fled the country ahead of the Federal Court's verdict, and is now held in an immigration detention centre in Australia.
Sirul last week said he is willing to return to Malaysia and reveal everything, on condition that he is granted a full pardon.
'Probe 1MDB chief'
Meanwhile, Lim also lodged a police report against 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy for allegedly making a false statement in relation to his repeated claims that 1MDB was not bankrupt and was able to pay off its debts through the company's debt “rationalisation” plan.
"He knew there was basis to believe that there were crimes committed by former top 1MDB officials - that they abused the rakyat's money and committed other offences," he said in the report.
Lim added that there were also others - ministers, top officials from Bank Negara, the Finance Ministry, the police and the MACC - that could have been involved in covering up the 1MDB scandal.
"I believe they, including Arul, had breached sections 202 and 203 of the Penal Code, Section 592 of the Companies Act, and committed many other crimes," he said.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng has revealed that the previous BN government had spent around RM7 billion bailing out 1MDB. This, despite the company's insistence that it could repay its own debts. - Mkini
