Segamat Umno Youth chief Bastien Onn has urged his party and the BN coalition to name the opposition leader as the Parliament will convene next month.
He said the move will reinforce BN's confidence in facing the Pakatan Harapan government in the upcoming parliamentary session on June 25.
“The opposition leader may not be the future prime minister, but we must select the best from BN lawmakers to be our (parliamentary) leader," Bastien said.
He noted that Johor Umno named the opposition leader in state assembly earlier.
"This is the first step taken by Johor Umno chief Khaled Nordin. Such a move showed that Johor BN accepted the people's choice in the last election with an open heart,” Bastien said in a statement to Malaysiakini.
He added that it would be also wise for BN to form a shadow cabinet to check on Harapan ministers.
“The effectiveness of check and balance will be the starting point to show the people our ability to return to govern.
"BN must work on their shadow cabinet in order to check all the policies introduced by the ministers," Bastien said.
