Seeing her father Anwar Ibrahim become a free man will be the “sweetest gift” for Nurul Izzah and her entire family this Ramadhan.
“We have missed so many Ramadhans, this is one of the sweetest gifts we can have as a family.
“Ramadhan has always been very special for us because all the grandchildren will congregate around my father, and sometimes he will even carry them on his back to have sahur (pre-dawn meal) together.
“But maybe not now, because he has a bad back,” she told members of the press after visiting Anwar today at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, where the PKR de facto leader is undergoing physiotherapy following a shoulder surgery.
Anwar is expected to walk out of the hospital a free mantomorrow afternoon, following a morning meeting by the Pardons Board over his royal pardon.
Nurul Izzah, who is one of PKR’s vice-presidents, also said the royal pardon was not only long-awaited vindication for Anwar and his family, but also for justice.
“It has been so long that we have been craving not just his freedom, but also for justice.
“It has never only been about our father, it is about doing it because it is right,” added the Permatang Pauh MP.
In 2015, Anwar was jailed a second time for a sodomy charge which he maintains was politically motivated.
Following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the recent polls, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad promised to expedite a royal pardon for his former deputy and political nemesis turned ally. -Mkini
