PAS says it got more votes, Syed Husin pours cold water

PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan said his party had polled more votes during the May 9 general election, compared with the 2013 election when it was part of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
"PAS is becoming more evergreen. In GE13, PAS polled 1,633,389 votes while this increased to 2,043,159 in GE14," Nasarudin posted on Facebook yesterday.
He said PAS had garnered more votes this time around, despite being totally rejected by Chinese voters.
In view of this, Nasrudin urged Umno members to join PAS. Umno fielded 106 parliamentary candidates, but won only 54 seats.
"Make PAS the new platform for the Islamic struggle and the channel for Malays, which is better and more committed to religion," he said.
In an immediate reply on Twitter, former PKR deputy president Syed Husin Ali wrote that PAS experienced an increase in the number of votes received because it fielded more candidates than before.
"(So) what is there to be proud of," Syed Husin asked Nasrudin, who was fielded by PAS in Indera Mahkota - but he garnered only 27.5 percent of the votes cast, coming in third behind BN and PKR.
PAS and its allies in Gagasan Sejahtera fielded 158 parliamentary candidates in GE14, of whom only 18 were elected, which translates to an 11.4 percent success rate.

According to Sin Chew Daily, PAS holds the record at 54 for the highest number of parliamentary candidates who lost their deposits.

Election rules state that candidates must secure 1/8 or 12.5 percent of the total votes cast to retain their RM15,000 deposit. -Mkini
