IPOH: The political deadlock is not about to end in Perlis as Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim insists that Datuk Seri Azlan Man does not have the backing of the nine Barisan Nasional state assemblymen.
When contacted Monday, the Perlis Barisan chairman said he was not aware of the support given to Azlan as being reported.
He said that as far as he knows, the majority of the state assemblymen do not back Azlan as Mentri Besar.
“Nobody told me, and as far as I know, the majority of the Barisan assemblymen do not support him.
“It is not true what is being reported, and we are in the midst of a legal process,” he added.
When asked to elaborate, he said his lawyers would be speaking soon.
Earlier, sources have indicated that the nine assemblymen, who were a no-show at Azlan’s swearing-in ceremony last Thursday (May 24), would heed the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail’s call to support Azlan.
But Malaysia’s smallest state ended up with a huge problem when the assemblymen aligned to Shahidan boycotted the swearing-in ceremony in Arau.
The Raja of Perlis, obviously incensed with their action, said all the state assemblymen had shown disrespect by not backing his choice for the mentri besar post.
The Ruler said he did not appoint Shahidan’s brother Datuk Ismail Kassim, who is Tambun Tulang assemblyman, as he did not want a mentri besar who would end up like a puppet.
