PSD denies terminating contract civil servants, probing viral claims

The Public Service Department (PSD) has denied terminating any contract civil servants, and is looking into claims of such terminations of contract occurring that have gone viral.
"Right now we have not issued any instructions... we have not gotten any orders (from the prime minister).
"We are looking into this to determine the facts," PSD director-general Zainal Rahim Seman told Malaysiakini.
Multiple accounts of government contract workers being terminated without notice are making the rounds on social media.
Zainal Rahim, however, did not discount the possibility that some of these terminations could be lapsed contracts.
"Contracts expiring does happen, it is a normal thing to happen in the public service," he said.
He added that he would leave it to chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa to comment further on the matter.
Yesterday, Bersatu strategic and policy chief Rais Hussin urged those affected to write to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's office to appeal their fates.
Prior to assuming office, Mahathir had said that civil servants would not be sacked.
However, in a press conference yesterday, he indicated that some civil servants may be shifted to other agencies, or possibly to the private sector. -Mkini
