Umno today sacked two of its assemblypersons who had supported Pakatan Harapan's formation of the state government in Perak.
They were Tualang Sekah assemblyperson Nolee Radzi and Sungai Manik assemblyperson Zainol Fadzi Paharuddin.
"Their membership became void automatically. They are no longer Umno members for supporting a non-BN government," de facto Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (above) told a press conference at the Umno headquarters today.
The duo had broken the deadlock in Perak as neither of the two coalitions in the state won a majority in the May 9 general election.
Harapan had won 29 seats, BN 27 seats while PAS captured three, making it the tie-breaker.
PAS had proposed a unity government without an opposition but the two Umno assemblyperson later decided to endorse Harapan giving it a majority.
However, the duo claimed they did not defect to Harapan but merely expressed support to break the deadlock in Perak.
Meanwhile, according to the vernacular Seehua Daily, Zainol and several other Umno members announced their intention to join Bersatu at a press conference in Ipoh today.
They said they would be handing over their membership forms soon. -Mkini
