Umno warns 'cowboy' cabinet appointments will tarnish nation's integrity

Umno wants the new government to appoint members of the cabinet in accordance with the Federal Constitution and with respect for the Conference of Rulers, former minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said.
“Cabinet appointments done in a disorganised and 'cowboy'-like manner will lead to the nation losing integrity and respect,” Rahman added in a media statement this afternoon.
The Umno communications unit member cited Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's announcement that Lim Guan Eng would be appointed as finance minister as an example.
Rahman said this announcement had drawn a negative reaction from members of the public, since Lim is facing corruption charges.
“So it came as no surprise when Mahathir made a U-turn on the appointment of the finance minister when the public questioned his action,” he added.
On Monday, Mahathir said the DAP secretary-general must clear his name before being sworn in as a minister.
Rahman also urged the new government to form a cabinet as soon as possible in order for the nation to move forward.
“The people are nervous and worried that even after a week since the general election, there is still no cabinet.
“Until now, announcements regarding the new government's policies and direction are made by non-ministers and this runs contrary to how a government is managed.
“Furthermore, this also courts problems, since those who make these announcements do not have the legitimacy to do so,” he added.
Rahman reminded the government that managing the nation must take precedence over other considerations.
The former minister also called on Pakatan Harapan to administer the nation in a proper manner and to fulfil the promises in its manifesto for the first 100 days in office.
“Certainly, the economic experts (appointed by the government) are capable of finding ways to fulfil these promises.
“We wish the Harapan government the best and hope it will work hard for the country and people,” he added. -Mkini
