YOURSAY | Hashim should realise that honesty is the best policy.
Quigonbond: I don't for a minute trust Election Commission (EC) chairperson Mohd Hashim Abdullah. Gerrymandering, forcing through redelineation without full consultation, non-justiciable electoral rolls, postal voting irregularity and a deliberate polling date to have low turnout, are only some of the key misconduct of the EC.
Others include delay in releasing form 14 during election night, poor training of presiding officers who refuse to follow the letter of the law under the conduct of elections regulations, etc.
I would suggest in earnest for the EC commissioners to tender their collective resignations as soon as their duties relating to this election is complete.
The Pakatan Harapan government should also look at, through the judicial appointments commission, status and promotion of judges who have failed the people who mounted various challenges on the redelineation exercise.
Negarawan: Hashim claimed the EC had carried out the 14th general election in a transparent, fair and just manner.
It is premature to say this until investigations into the many allegations of EC’s violation of the election laws and constitution, and the conduct of the EC during the campaign period and polling day have been done.
Hashim should realise that honesty is the best policy.
Annonymous: Hashim, you could have easily held this most important once-in-five-year event/election on a weekend where everyone is free, but you proceeded to undermine this important electoral process and choose to cause untold disruption on the people's life by deliberately holding the crucial election smack in the middle of the week, a school day and on a busiest working day, causing untold suffering, lost in productivity and billions of ringgit in losses in national revenue when the business community had to close shop and an unnecessary public holiday need to be declared and when millions of outstation rakyat find it very difficult/denied free passage to come home to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
And you call that just and fair? You must be prosecuted for this crime against the people.
Gerard Lourdesamy: Indeed, Hisham conduct of the elections was an utter disgrace. EC officers refusing to sign the Borang 13 and 14. Long lines. Slow processing. Delaying the results.
Failing to contain the widespread use of money and bribes to get votes. Bringing in ballot boxes after counting has started.
The EC was conspiring with BN to ensure a victory for former prime minister Najib Razak. But the power of the rakyat was too overwhelming. No idiot would have an election on a Wednesday and not a Saturday.
Even African countries have better election commissions than ours. The entire commission ought to be sacked.
They have lost the confidence of the rakyat. The smooth transition of power happened due to the support of the police and armed forces who voted in large numbers for Harapan.
David Dass: "We were transparent, fair and just," said the EC chief. Does he really believe that? Or is it something he simply must say.
The staff who managed the voting centres and the counting process are to be commended.
But the events leading up to the elections were nothing short of farcical. The redelineation exercise and the malapportionment by the squeezing of more Chinese into already large constituencies was mischievous and undemocratic.
The disqualifying of former Batu MP Tian Chua and the prevention of Dr S Streram from filing his papers to contest the Rantau state seat in Negeri Sembilan were clearly not “transparent, fair and just."
Anonymous_1425871172: Hashim, we will let the new AG investigate on how fair you have been treating the rakyat in the past.
By holding the general election on Wednesday has already set the intention of being unfair to rakyat. Not to mention the challenges we have to face during the election day.
Just wait for the actual investigation but I don't think it will be favourable to you.
Léon Moch: Although many allegations against the EC may need further investigations to prove or disprove, some are already proven by numbers and EC's own deeds.
For example, the EC did in fact redelineate constituencies in contravention with basic principles for such exercises.
Look at the former Petaling Jaya Utara seat, now known as Damansara. It had 86,000 plus voters. After redelineation, it has double that, resulting in a 100,000 plus majority for Tony Pua.
This is clearly irregular and unfair as it further dilutes the representation of the people in that constituency as compared to other constituencies.
Before the EC pushed through the redelineation, many parties have protested officially with studies and facts to back them up. Opposition parliamentarians had fought against it.
But EC did not pay any heed to this and went ahead with it. Is the EC now saying it has no knowledge of the redelineation? If no, surely it cannot claim to be fair and independent.
Overseas Postal Voter: Two days ago, DHL called me to tell me that my package containing my votes was rejected by the recipient. The reason given was that I needed to have the personal name of the recipient.
But what I had was “Pegawai Pengurus Returning Officer”. Which voter knows the name of the returning officer, pray tell me?
I spent more than RM100 and jumped over hoops to post my vote back to meet the deadline. But to no avail. Thank God, Harapan won.
Speaking Sense: Interpretation of Hashim’s words:
We tried our best to cheat but the tsunami was too strong and we promise to try harder in cheating for the new government if given the chance again so, please let us keep our cushy jobs. -Mkini
