The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today accepted the first defence statement of Deepak Jaikishian which he gave to lawyer Americk Sidhu on Oct 25 last year in the suit filed by A Santamil Selvi, the widow of P Balasubramaniam linked to murdered Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu murder.
Deepak through his new counsel Vinod Kamalamathan today consented to Santamil Selvi’s request that his first defence be accepted and the that his second defence statement filed by senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah on Nov 7 last year be rejected.
Justice Hue Siew Kheng also ruled that that Shafee had no authority to act for Deepak previously. She also accepted Deepak’s withdrawal of an application filed by Shafee’s firm to recuse her.
Justice Hue made the decision in chambers after meeting all parties.
Santamil Selvi’s lawyer Americk Sidhu told this to reporters after meeting the judge in chambers.
Deepak, when met later by Malaysiakini, said this showed that he was forced to appoint Shafee.
He also said the first defence which he has given to Americk was consistent with the press conferences’ statements he had given earlier.
