ALTANTUYA’S FATHER TO MEET DR MAHATHIR TOMORROW: RUBBISHING TALK NAJIB PAID HIM OFF, SETEV SAYS SIRUL’S ABSENCE WON’T AFFECT RE-OPENING OF TRIAL TO FIND OUT ‘WHO ORDERED THE KILLING’

KUALA LUMPUR: The father of murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu will be meeting with the Prime Minister on Wednesday (June 20).
The family’s lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh confirmed that Dr Setev Shaariibuu (pic) would meet Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at 5pm in Putrajaya.
Dr Setev would be meeting Attorney General Tommy Thomas at 3pm on Tuesday (June 19) on the possibility of reopening the case.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had said last month that the police had not found any grounds to reopen investigations into the case.
Altantuya, 28, is believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown to bits with explosives at a secondary forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam in 2006.
In 2009, Sirul Azhar Umar and accomplice Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering Altantuya and were sentenced to death.
The Court of Appeal overturned their sentences in 2013 but upon the prosecution’s appeal, were upheld by the Federal Court.
Sirul fled to Australia where he was detained by the Australian Immigration after Interpol issued a red notice on him.
He has been at the detention centre since 2015, where he is hoping to get asylum. – ANN

‘Altantuya murder mastermind more important than Sirul’

Mongolian national Setev Shaariibuu is not concerned with ex-police commando Sirul Azhar Umar – the man convicted of killing his daughter Altantuya.
Instead, Setev wants to know who ordered his daughter to be killed.
“I don’t want to talk about Sirul, or about the death penalty (he faces).
“The most important thing is who ordered for this murder… Not Sirul,” Setev said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Likewise, his lawyer Ramkarpal Singh also said that Sirul was not important to a possible re-opening of the Altantuya murder investigation, as there is evidence to be found here.
He also argued that it is likely police already know who ordered the killing, and it would not take long for this matter to be brought to light.
He said jailed former ex-police commando Azilah Hadri, however, may be useful to the case and is still in Malaysia as compared to Sirul, who is currently in an Australian immigration detention centre.
He also said key witnesses had not been called to testify in the case.
This is believed to be in reference to Sirul’s former superior Musa Safri, the aide-de-camp of Najib Abdul Razak, who was deputy prime minister at the time of the murder.
Altantuya was killed in October 2006 in Shah Alam. Sirul and Azilah were convicted for the murder.
However, the motive for the murder was not established in court.
Malaysia is currently unable to extradite Sirul as Australia has a policy against sending back convicts facing the death penalty.
Ramkarpal, however, said Sirul could be extradited if the death sentence is abolished, or the latter’s penalty commuted to life imprisonment.

Najib didn’t pay me, says Altantuya’s father

The father of slain Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu has denied receiving any funds from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“I’ve heard this kind of talk that Najib already paid money to me but it’s not true,” Setev Shaariibuu said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
He jested that Najib’s funds seized by the new federal government should be going to him and his family.
Setev and his grandchildren are suing the government for compensation for the death of Altantuya.
Setev said this when asked about speculation that Najib had paid him off.
Setev and his grandchildren are suing the government for compensation to the tune of RM100 million for the death of Altantuya
Asked if anyone else from BN had tried to pay him off, Setev, through his Mongolian translator Tugsbayar, said one person had “tried to be a hero” but that nothing came of it.
Tugsbayar later clarified that this (somebody wanting to pay Setev) was also just a rumour.
“It is just a rumour that there was this person who wanted to be a hero and give money, but there was no such person,” the translator said.
Setev’s lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said the quantum sought would be subject to an assessment by the courts should he succeed in his civil suit.
The defendants in the civil suit are ex-police commandos Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar, Altantuya’s former lover Razak Baginda and the government of Malaysia.
The previous BN government had filed an application to exclude itself from the suit.
The Altantuya murder haunted the previous BN regime for years over speculation that she was killed because she had inside knowledge relating to Malaysia’s 2002 purchase of two Scorpene submarines from France and huge kickbacks allegedly given to Najib and his cronies.
Najib has repeatedly denied knowing Altantuya or of having any involvement in her murder.
Sirul and Azilah (above) were convicted of her murder in 2009 and sentenced to hang. They were later released when the Court of Appeal court overturned the conviction in 2013, ruling that the High Court judge had erred.
However, the Federal Court upheld their death sentences in 2015. Sirul fled the country ahead of that ruling while Azhar is currently on death row. – MKINI
