Amirudin Shari is the frontrunner among three candidates shortlisted to replace PKR vice-president Mohamed Azmin Ali as Selangor menteri besar, according to party insiders.
The 38-year-old Sungai Tua assemblyperson is also a PKR central committee member.
Amirudin is currently the state exco for youth development, sports, cultural and entrepreneurship development.
Azmin, who is vacating the menteri besar post to assume his new role at the federal level as economic affairs minister, is scheduled to meet Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah tomorrow regarding his successor.
Contacted this evening, Amirudin confirmed that his name was on the list.
“For now, what I can mention to the public is that I'm one of the candidates named by the party leaders,” he told Malaysiakini.
However, Amirudin declined to confirm or deny if he had heard news about becoming the next menteri besar.
“I think the final decision must be made by the sultan. So, I guess we have to wait patiently about a day or two before June 19 (when the swearing-in takes place),” he added.
The other two names said to be on the list were PKR vice-president Shaharuddin Baharuddin and Dr Idris Ahmad.
Shaharuddin is the assemblyperson for Seri Setia, whereas Idris retained his Ijok seat in the May 9 general election.
Commenting further, Amirudin said he is certain the party leaders and the sultan would make the right decision on who should spearhead the state administration.
“The candidate will be chosen to ensure Selangor enjoys continued development and stability,” he added.
