Annuar: Don't be alarmed, 1MDB probe nothing to do with Umno

The 1MDB probe has nothing to do with Umno and there is no reason for the party to be alarmed, said information chief Annuar Musa.

"Don't get mixed up, Umno is a political party. We don't have anything to do with 1MDB," he told Malaysiakini when met at PWTC in Kuala Lumpur today.

According to Annuar, Umno had no knowledge of what transpired in 1MDB and was never briefed on any of the dealings handled by the state-owned company.

He was asked to respond to a report by The Malaysian Insightwhich quoted sources as claiming that enforcement agencies were probing some 1,000 people, including politicians suspected to have been paid with 1MDB funds.

The report said those being investigated included former prime minister Najib Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor, the wider Razak clan, BN politicians, top civil servants, businesspersons and lawyers.

Asked about the report, Annuar said: "It is shocking because the number is so big. But we cannot say we believe it or not. I am equally anxious to know.

"Let the investigation process continue and the rule of law will prevail."

Meanwhile, former second finance minister Johari Abdul Ghani said he was surprised by the number of people being probed.

"If it is true what has been said in that report, I’m sure the public would like to know.

"The 1,000 people being investigated is something new to me. But one thing for sure, I can guarantee you, my name is not there," said the Umno supreme council member. -Mkini
