PETALING JAYA: The ongoing Umno elections shows that the party is more open, democratic and inclusive than ever before, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid, who is assuming the duties of Umno president, said that the current polls were the "mother of all democracy" in the party since 1988, as the leadership had decided there would be no pre-conditions.
In the ongoing party polls, all party positions are open for contest, including the top two, compared to "no-contest" party resolutions in previous elections.
"This shows a changing Umno. It is the first step towards change so that the party remains relevant in the country's politics," he said in a statement on Sunday (June 24).
.He also asked all those in Umno to stand up and to strengthen the party and make it relevant in the hearts of Malaysians, especially the Malays and bumiputra.
He also congratulated the winners of the elections for Umno's wings (Wanita, Youth and Puteri).
Zahid will be contesting the post of president in the polls next week.
He will face four other rivals for the party presidency – Kelantan prince Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, outgoing Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, Bandar Tun Razak committee member Mohamed Iqbal Maricair and Iskandar Puteri member Mohd Yusof Musa @ Jamaluddin.- Star
