Ex-PM urges rivals to forgive each other to mark Aidilfitri

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has urged political rivals to lay down their arms now that the general election was over.
“Although I’m no longer the prime minister, I want Malaysians to live in peace and harmony without the antagonism due to political rivalry we saw during the last elections.
“We know that caused friction among family and friends. Many were hurt. To mark Syawal, let us be forgiving and turn the page. Forget the past,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Najib said Aidilfitri this year was a different experience for him and his comrades because they were no longer in government.
He described Ramadan - which saw the police raiding his home, former offices and properties allegedly linked to him - as a test for him and family.
“These tests gave me the space to engage in prayer and reflection during this holy month,” he said.
Najib noted that the transition of power prior to Ramadan had taken place peacefully and hoped that future political rivalry would be done in a healthy manner.
“As we greet our friends (during Aidilfitri), be understanding because all Malaysians are pinning high hopes on the government of the day to ensure stability and to carry out their mandate,” he said.
It is uncertain if Najib was making a general statement or one that was related to the upcoming Umno party elections later this month.
The Umno election campaign is currently in full swing with Najib’s former No 2 Ahmad Zahid Hamidi still the lone candidate for the presidency. -Mkini
