FORMER SRC International director Suboh Md Yassin has surrendered to Malaysian authorities after being on the run for three years.
Suboh, who was sought along with former SRC International managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil and businessman Low Taek Jho, returned to Malaysia last week.
He was arrested by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers and had his statement recorded.
“He has surrendered to MACC,” said a source who refused to reveal more.
The Malaysian Insight learnt MACC had contacted Suboh to ask that he assist in the investigations.
Suboh disappeared in 2015 at the height of investigations into the scandal. He was believed to have sought refuge in Indonesia, Thailand and New Zealand.
Sources said Suboh, Nik Faisal and Low were the key witnesses in the investigation into SRC International and RM2.6 billion found in the personal bank accounts of Najib Razak.
Suboh and Nik Faisal were shareholders of Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, one of two companies which allegedly transferred RM42 million from SRC International into Najib’s accounts.
Nik Faisal is said to have been a close associate of Low and had acted as the intermediary between construction company UBG Bhdd, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) and Petro Saudi in channeling US$260 million (RM1 billion) allegedly siphoned from 1MDB in 2010, to buy stakes in UBG.
In 2015, MACC investigators had issued a statement seeking the assistance of Suboh, Nik Faisal and Jho Low.
The probe ended abruptly that year when then prime minister Najib dismantled the special task force investigating the scandal.
Attorney-General Gani Patail who was heading the task force was replaced by Mohamed Apandi Ali who cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in relation to 1MDB in January 2016.
The probe into SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB, was reopened after the 14th general election when Pakatan Harapan won federal power.
Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor have since been questioned by MACC. Police also raided premises linked to Najib where they seized RM114 million, nearly 300 designer hanbags, and 37 luggage bags filled jewellery and other valuables.
As investigations gained momentum, MACC on Thursday released a statement seeking the arrest of Nik Faisal and Low. Warrants of arrest were also issued for the two.
It was learnt Low’s lawyers contacted the MACC but were told the anti-graft agency was only interested in speaking to the billionaire.
Sources told The Malaysian Insight the MACC taskforce met new Attorney-General Tommy Thomas yesterday to brief him on developments in the investigation.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced Low would be arrested for his involvement in the 1MDB scandal, adding Low was currently in a country that did not have an extradition agreement with Malaysia.
The prime minister did not say which country but sources told The Malaysian Insight that the two wanted men were in China.
