PETALING JAYA: Johor’s crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has defended his right to give his views and opinions on politics in the run-up to the 14th general election (GE14) last month.

In a Facebook post on the Johor Southern Tigers page, Tunku Ismail said he had been told that some football fans were apparently staying away from Johor Darul Ta’zim matches due to his political views.

“I was also informed that they didn’t like the statement I made prior to the elections. To me, everyone has the right to their own views and opinions.

For me, I had a good relationship with the previous administration and I also have a good working relationship with the new administration.”

This, he said could be confirmed with the menteri besar, the executive councillors and government officials.

Tunku Ismail said it didn’t matter which party a person came from as the most important thing was the sovereignty of Johor and the welfare of its people.

“They all need to remember that they do not serve the ideology of a political party but rather, the people.

“Having said this, if a fan can’t differentiate between politics and sports, that’s not my problem. You can’t be too obsessed and link politics to everything. No matter what happens, Johor must be prioritised.”

Previously, Tunku Ismail made headlines with a posting that indirectly criticised then opposition leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was on a visit to Johor as part of the election campaign.

He received flak for his views, with hundreds of critical comments left on the page.
