An appreciation dinner organised for DAP's Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency volunteers last night was disrupted by a faulty fuse, which burnt and filled the hall with smoke, forcing those attending out of the venue.
"It's a very unfortunate incident, and I seek our volunteers' understanding in the matter. It was unforeseen, and we apologise for the mishap," DAP Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh told reporters after the incident.
The incident occurred on the upper floor of the Caring Society Complex on Jalan Utama in Penang.
"I am glad and relieved we realised the matter early before something bad happened, we believe the cause of the fire was due to a burning fuse.
"We would like to tell our volunteers that we would organise another similar dinner soon," he added.
The incident took place at around 9pm, when a burning smell was detected in the hall, disrupting Seri Delima assemblyperson Syerleena Abdul Rashid's speech.
The smell seemed to be coming from behind the stage where Syerleena was speaking.
The lights were switched off and the dinner crowd were ushered out in the darkness to a safer spot in the complex.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was whisked to the ground floor.
Accompanying him were Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and other state assemblypersons who were present at the event.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel rushed to the venue but did not spot any fire.
The volunteers, who remained in good spirits despite the slight misadventure, chanted "Pakatan Harapan" several times after the situation was brought to order. -Mkini
