Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak is adjusting to the “new reality” in Malaysia as he holds an open house at his residence in Pahang for the first time.
“It is not a question of missing (celebrating Hari Raya at Seri Perdana). You just have to adjust to the new reality,” he said when met by reporters at his open house in Pekan.
Usually, he added, he would hold his Pekan open house two weeks after the first day of Raya unlike on the first day like this year.
Previously, he said, he would be busy with his obligations in Kuala Lumpur as a federal minister and later as the prime minister.
“The supporters here (in Pekan) have given me a mandate with such a huge majority so I am holding my Raya open house here,” he said.
With two huge tents, about 500 people have crowded Najib’s residence since 10.30am to feast on food such as grilled mutton, nasi kandar, cendol and ice cream.
They were also waiting for a chance to meet and take pictures with their parliamentarian, Najib, who was mobbed when he came forward to greet those who had come for the open house.
Najib said he was quite pleased with the reception said that he had wanted the occasion to be more homely this time around which was why it was being held at his residence this year.
“I’m quite happy (with the turnout). They are also adjusting to me having a reception on the first day.
“And we wanted to keep it modest compared to before,” he said.
Also spotted at the open house was former DAP vice-chairperson Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim.
“I just dropped by to wish Najib a ‘Selamat Hari Raya’.
“I’ve never been to Pekan before so I thought it’d be nice,” the 84-year-old said to Malaysiakini before leaving at around 11.45pm.
