No free squatting for free lunch outlet - Jamal calls for leniency

Sungai Besar Umno division head Jamal Md Yunos has pleaded with the authorities to postpone plans to shut down a free lunch canteen in Kuala Lumpur which he set up.
In a statement today, he said his Restoran Gabungan NGO 1 Malaysia team needed time to identify and relocate to a new premises.
"Moreover, our staff have been on leave as Hari Raya falls on Friday," Jamal said while adding that the canteen was set up with charity in mind.
The Federal Territories Land and Mines Office had issued an eviction notice on June 8 and accused the canteen operator of squatting on state land.
Jamal and his team have up until June 18 to empty the premises on Jalan Pahang. Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to RM500,000 and a maximum five-year jail term.
The authorities added that no appeal would be entertained.
Restoran Gabungan NGO 1 Malaysia was set up in October last year with the intention of serving free lunches for 1,000 people for three years.
Patrons are not limited to the amount of food they eat but are required to wash their own plates and cutlery.
The canteen was reportedly a big hit and even attracted then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to serve food to patrons. -Mkini
