Lembah Pantai Umno chief Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin has announced that he will not defend his position in the upcoming June 30 party polls.
Raja Nong Chik said he made this decision to give way to fresh faces to lead the party in Lembah Pantai.
"Before the 14th general election, I already said that if I lose, I only want to be a normal member without any positions.
"I have already discussed this with my family and friends in the division.
"This is a decision that needs to be made for the sake of the change that Umno needs," he said while officiating the delegates' meeting for the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings of Lembah Pantai today.
In last month's polls, Raja Nong Chik once again failed to capture Lembah Pantai from PKR, losing to newcomer Fahmi Fadzil by 5,598 votes.
‘Arrogance will drive people away’
Apart from that, Raja Nong Chik also stressed that Umno needs to change at all levels to allow new leaders to helm the party.
"We have to fix the rakyat's perception, especially the youths, towards Umno and we need to accept the fact that the party and BN are not like how it used to be.
"There should not be any among us who are arrogant because that was what happened when we were in power then.
"The rakyat will get sick of us and distance themselves from us," he said.
It is understood that the leadership of the Lembah Pantai will be taken over by deputy chief Ramlan Askolani, while Azizan Shariff will square off against Saleha Abdullah for division Wanita chief.
There will be no contests for the division Youth and Puteri chiefs, meaning that Muhamad Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin and Masliha Harun will hold the respective posts.
The results for all three Umno wings will be formally announced later this evening. -Mkini
